This year, Benefits by Design (BBD) Inc. held an internal photo contest.
The rules of the photo contest were simple: submit your photos anonymously under one of four categories and then vote for your favourite photo in each category. Our goal was to have four clear winning photographs (one from each category), chosen by popular vote by BBD employees.
We had overwhelming participation, both in photo submissions and votes on favourite photos. The winners won in more ways than one – winning photographs were turned into unique thank you cards that are being used in each office.
Introducing BBD’s New Thank You Cards
We express our thanks and recognize employees’ accomplishments often, because we know that’s important. Our managers and senior leaders are given cards and budgets specifically for recognizing employees’ accomplishments. Because of this demand, BBD was in the market for some new thank you cards to use internally and externally to express thanks, offer congratulations for milestones and significant achievements with BBD.
We combined our need for thank you cards and our idea for a photo contest into an internal challenge. The winners in each of the four categories would be made into four unique thank you cards for BBD managers and employees to use. You can see the four winners below:
We would like to again offer congratulations to our winners:
Brittnee Hart, Regional Director – “Serenity by Lake Superior”, submitted under the Peace/Calm category.
Tiago Dantas, Database Administrator – “Sprung”, submitted under the Bright/Energy category.
Elaine Evenden, Seniour New Business Specialist – “Cattails”, submitted under the Warmth/Connection category.
Danielle Lalonde, Client Manager – “Basket Full of Puppies”, submitted under the New/Young category.
Special mention also goes out to Julia Dotto, Regional Director, whose submission, “Lavender Fields” tied for first place under the New/Young category, but was not produced on a BBD Thank You Card, as we could only have four.
Keep an eye out for these cards as your relationship with BBD continues. We love showing our thanks, just as we love showcasing our employee’s talent and passion. Our new thank you cards allow us to do both and we love using them.
Tips from the BBD Pros: How to Take a Good Picture
Our offices across Canada are full of some amazingly passionate artists and photographers who have plenty of skill behind the lens. We asked a few of the Photo Contest’s biggest participants to share some of their secrets for taking a good photo, and here is what they had to say:
“Rule of thirds! If you visually break a frame into thirds, the object you are photographing should be on one of the outer thirds – never in the middle. Our eyes look to the edge of a photo frame before we ever look dead centre.”
– Brittnee Hart, Winner: Peace/Calm
“Take photos of what you’re passionate about. Be in the moment. Don’t worry about the mechanics of your camera. Photograph what you love and you’ll never take a ‘bad’ photo.”
– Elaine Evenden, Winner: Warmth/Connection
“Less is more. Don’t go crazy with the filters.”
– Tony Summerfelt, Runner-Up
