[FREE DOWNLOAD] Group insurance Quick Tax Facts Guide for 2026
By: Benefits by Design | Tuesday February 3, 2026
Each year, we produce a Canadian group insurance Quick Tax Facts Guide (say that five times fast) for employers and advisors. This guide includes critical information about taxes, their implications, taxable and non-taxable benefits, and their rates as they affect group benefits plans each year.
Benefits by Design (BBD) and People Corporation makes every effort to ensure that this document is accurate and up to date. However, legislature and policies may change over time. This document is updated annually for each new tax year.
What is in the Quick Tax Facts Guide?
Here’s what you can expect from the guide:
- Canada Pension Plan (CPP) annual contribution limits, including the secondary contribution level;
- Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) annual contribution limits, including the secondary contribution level;
- Employment Insurance (EI) annual update of the weekly maximum;
- Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) annual updates;
- Registered Pension/Savings Plan annual contribution limits;
- Tax-Free Savings Account annual contribution limits;
- Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) reporting obligation and how to;
- Provincial Medical Plan information, including funding and payroll exemptions;
- Group Benefits Taxation, detailing which benefits are taxable or non-taxable.

Recent changes
In 2023, the government rolled out the CDCP, and with that came a new tax reporting requirement. Employers are now obligated to report whether or not an employee had access to dental benefits during the tax reporting year.
Additionally, in response to concerns about the longevity of the CPP and QPP, the government also created a secondary contribution level for higher earners starting in 2024. This second level provides extra benefits during retirement, and only those who pay into it will have access to it.
