Employers are getting more and more savvy with their employee searches. Many of you are turning to your employee benefits to help attract top talent. Promoting them in your job listing can be advantageous, however, it’s a good idea to follow some simple guidelines to make sure the hype is hitting the mark.
Why your job listing should include employee benefits
Your employee benefits are part of the total compensation for an employee. This includes benefits like life insurance, health care, and dental care, but also perks like flexible working arrangements, number of vacation days, or in-office treadmill desks.
How to build a total compensation package that satisfies employee demands
So, when someone is job prospecting, and they only see salary listed, their idea of the total compensation your company is offering is limited. Not only is it misleading to them, but it’s also downplaying the job offer. By showcasing your employee benefits in the job listing, you are also highlighting part of your company culture. For example, an organization that offers free monthly yoga sessions shows a culture that is dedicated to employee health.
Another compelling reason is that more employers are using this tactic. In fact, the number of job postings which included employee benefits grew by more than 50% last year.
Importantly, employees are looking out for it. In one experiment, they found that candidates are most interested in salary and benefits or perks when they are reading your job listing.
Promoting your employee benefits in your job listing
When featuring your employee benefits in your job listing, there are some key details to keep in mind so they stand out.
1. More than a list
At some point, you will want to list your benefits. However, to ensure people actually read them, make sure to include a short explanation of what each benefit is and the advantages for employees.
You don’t necessarily have to list all benefits if you have an extremely comprehensive package. This could again become lengthy and boring. Instead, choose a sampling of benefits to promote.
Harness the power of technology. Include links to brochures or set up an employee benefits webpage they can go to that has a more comprehensive overview of the benefits. You can even create a benefits quiz which prospective employees can take to show which benefits they are most likely to use based on their lifestyle and life stage.
2. The importance of words
Use easy to understand language. Not everyone is an employee benefits expert, so the explanation needs to be clear and concise. Again, this is where technology can come into play – you can create short videos or infographics that demonstrate the benefits.
3. Showcase the love
Highlight benefits your current employees use the most – you can use aggregate data to show just how much. Since your current employees love it, it will likely be a draw for job seekers as well.
People who are interested in your job offer will be doing their own research. Make sure your social media channels are highlighting your company benefits as well. You can do this with employee testimonials, usage stats, or company supported charity events. This will also display your company culture, something which has become especially important to the younger generations.
Highlight perks like cancer navigation, second opinion services, or Diagnostic and Specialist Access Insurance (DSAI) which help employees get the most out of their healthcare journeys, and get them there quicker.
4. Show me the money
Don’t be afraid to include the monetary value of the benefits for employees. For example, reimbursement levels can show exactly how much an employee could save. Spending account allotments and the amount the company pays per year for premiums per employee are also good examples of how the value can be directly calculated into the employee’s total compensation.
5. Bespoke job listings
Customize the benefits you advertise for the role you are looking to fill. Tailor them to the location, job description, and level of experience needed.
Highlight perks that use technology, like wellness platforms that integrate with wearable trackers, or programs that offer personalized notifications and encouragement. This higher level of personalization shows you care about the individual health journey of each employee.
6. Anything you can do I can do better…
Do you know you’re doing something great, and even better than your competitors? Don’t be afraid to flaunt it if you got it!
If you aren’t sure, you can use the BBD Benchmarking tool to check if your benefits stack up.
You can also include perks like flexible working hours or hybrid options. It’s a chance to broadcast what you do differently – do you have a non-work-related coffee chat every Friday? Or maybe you take your employees to the movies 4x a year? Highlight it!
7. Lean on me
Involve your benefits plan administrator – they have the knowledge and know which benefits to showcase. They can also make sure all the details are correct, and they can provide guidance on how to showcase those amazing employee benefits in your job listing.
Employee benefits as part of total compensation can be a powerful way to entice potential candidates to respond to your job listing. But it’s important to advertise them in a way so that employees understand their value and are therefore moved to apply.
